Council up for two more national awards

Croydon Council’s approach to preventing homelessness and its post-Grenfell fire sprinkler programme have been named finalists ahead of a national awards ceremony.

The MJ Achievement Awards 2019 this June will recognise councils across the country whose initiatives and staff have made an exceptional difference to their residents and local area.

Croydon has been named a finalist in two categories – Best Social Housing Initiative for its post-Grenfell fire safety work retrofitting sprinklers for over 1,250 households in 26 of its tallest tower blocks; and the Delivering Better Outcomes category for its work helping people at risk of homelessness, including welfare advice and financial support for families in need and housing for former rough sleepers.

Under the MJ Achievement Awards’ category of Care and Health Integration, Croydon has also received a separate commendation for the work of One Croydon Alliance, a partnership with the NHS and Age UK to boost elderly residents’ independence by preventing unnecessary hospital stays.

The MJ Awards nominations come after Croydon Council was named a winner in two categories at the Local Government Chronicle Awards in March – Campaign of the Year for the Choose Your Future drive to unite the borough against youth violence, and One Croydon Alliance won the Health and Social Care Award.

“Our staff do a fantastic job delivering frontline services for local people, and these nominations are great examples of their work. I wish the nominees all the very best in the final.”

Councillor Tony Newman, leader of the council

The MJ Achievement Awards ceremony takes place on the evening of Wednesday 26 June in central London.
