COVID-19 update: a message from Councillor Hamida Ali, leader of the council

Thanks to our local NHS partners, 189,487 Croydon residents have now had their first dose of the vaccine and 114,575 people have had both doses. This really is fantastic progress in helping to keep Croydon safe and a huge thank you to all NHS staff who are working tirelessly to deliver this pioneering programme.

Although Croydon’s incidence rate remains low overall, we have seen an increase in recent weeks, so it’s important that everyone who is eligible takes the vaccine to ensure the best possible protection against the virus. If you’re a Croydon resident over 30, or a frontline health or social care worker and haven’t had your first Covid-19 vaccine, Croydon University Hospital (CUH) are offering a drop-in vaccination clinic over the weekend. You don’t need an appointment – just turn up between 8am-7pm on Saturday or Sunday. If you can’t make the CUH clinic, book your appointment now online. Taking up the vaccine when offered is something all of us can do to help protect ourselves, protect our loved ones and help our communities get back to normal.

National Volunteers Week (1-7 June) has been an opportunity for us to celebrate the thousands of Croydon residents who make such an important contribution to our communities, by giving freely of their time to help others. I want to thank all of you for everything you do, and particularly the vital role you continue to play in our response to the pandemic. From delivering food parcels to those in need, to providing befriending services for those experiencing isolation, our volunteers make a huge difference in so many ways.

As we approach Carers Week (7-14 June) I also want to thank another group who make a hugely important contribution to Croydon but are sadly often not as visible as they should be. Carers are on the frontline every day of their lives, providing essential care for loved ones who are some of our most vulnerable residents. The last year has been incredibly tough, with many experiencing social isolation during lockdowns. If you are a carer, please make sure you access all support that is available. As we head into the last weekend of half term with more sunshine predicted, I hope you will all enjoy some time with friends and family outdoors. Please help us look after our parks and keep them clean for everyone to enjoy by taking your litter home with you if the bin is full – and always remember hands, face, space.

Yours,

Councillor Hamida Ali, leader of the council
