COVID-19 update: a message from Councillor Hamida Ali, leader of the council

With the news that we are edging slowly closer to a national vaccine programme for Covid-19, now is not the time to relax – but to keep going.

While this is a really positive development, there is still a long way to go before any vaccine will be widely available so I want ask you all to keep up all the hard work you have all been doing to protect yourselves and each other.

During this time of national restrictions, you are still permitted to leave home to get tested if you have any of the Covid-19 symptoms and I want to emphasise how important it is that you do.

While the virus may only trigger a small reaction in you, it could be deadly for an older person or someone who is more vulnerable. That is why it is vital that you self-isolate if you develop any of the symptoms, however mild – by doing so, you could be saving someone else’s life.

If you have a new continuous cough, a high temperature, or a loss of taste or smell, you and your household should start self-isolating immediately and book a free test for anyone with symptoms, online or by calling 119.

You can order a home test or book a slot at one of the local drive through or walk-through centres – we have both operating in our borough with plenty of capacity.

When you book your test online or by calling 119, you will be given advice on travelling to the test centre safely.  You must not use public transport or taxi to travel to walk-through centres – wear a mask and walk or cycle instead – as you could pass the virus to others and put them at risk. You should only leave home to get tested – go straight there and back and don’t stop at the shops on the way.

I cannot over emphasise how important it is that we all continue to follow the advice on hands, face, space – washing our hands often; covering our face in enclosed spaces; and staying 2m from others.

Even if you are not showing symptoms, you may still have the virus and be able to spread it to other people. That’s why we must all avoid close contact with others, to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

If we all do this, it WILL make a difference. Thank you and stay safe,

Councillor Hamida Ali, leader of the council
