COVID-19 update: a message from Councillor Tony Newman, leader of the council

This morning, a Croydon police officer made the ultimate sacrifice when he lost his life in service to our community.

This is an absolutely devastating loss and my first thoughts today are with his family, friends and our partners at Croydon police who work tirelessly to keep our borough safe.

The Town Hall flag has been lowered as a mark of respect and I have been able to pass our condolences to the Borough Commander. I know everyone in Croydon will be thinking of all those affected by this tragic incident today.

Covid-19 and keeping Croydon safe

As of today, London is now on the national Covid-19 watch list as cases continue to rise across the capital and this is a stark reminder of the situation we are now facing.

Cases in Croydon are increasing and our director of public health has moved our area risk level from low to medium.

So now is not the time for complacency. Earlier this week I met with leaders from across Croydon – the police, health services, faith groups and business representatives – at the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP).

We have worked in close partnership throughout the pandemic to support our community and now the time has come for us to once again step up our response and ask you all to play your part too.

We are an incredibly strong community in Croydon and it is time for us to demonstrate that as we have done before, by working together and doing all we can to keep Croydon safe.

It is crucial now that we all help to protect ourselves and others from the virus by following the public health advice at all times:

• Washing hands regularly, wearing a face covering in enclosed spaces and keeping a 2m distance from others.
• Sticking to the rule of six – do not meet in groups larger than this number.
• If you have any of the coronavirus symptoms, you MUST self-isolate and get tested. You should only leave your home to get a test.

You can check the symptoms and book a test online at www.nhs/coronavirus. Find out more about the government guidance at www.gov.uk/coronavirus.

If you haven’t already, download the NHS Covid-19 app which provides links to all the latest information and supports the NHS Test and Trace system, which in turn helps to keep our community safe.

Croydon Renewal Plan

Thank you to all the residents who have written in to share their ideas as we plan for a sustainable future for our council and our borough.

As we develop our plans to transform as an organisation and ensure that we keep on delivering all-important services, I’m keen to hear from as many of you as possible.

You can find out more about the plan here and share your thoughts with me at Croydonplan@croydon.gov.uk

Have a good weekend – and stay safe.

Yours,

Tony
