Croydon is supporting Foster Care Fortnight 2026 (11–24 May), as the Council continues to seek compassionate, dedicated people to open their homes to children and young people in need.

Run by The Fostering Network, Foster Care Fortnight is a national recruitment campaign. Across the UK, the demand for foster carers continues to exceed supply, and Croydon is no exception. Right now, children and young people in the care of Croydon Council are in urgent need of safe, stable and nurturing homes.

With one of the largest young populations of any London borough, supporting children to thrive is a key priority for Croydon. That is why Executive Mayor Jason Perry is urging residents to consider whether fostering could be the right choice for them and to help give every young person in care the opportunity to flourish.

This year’s campaign theme ‘This is Fostering’, shines a light on the everyday realities of fostering. From the small moments that matter to the trust that is built over time, and the profound difference a foster carer can make to a child’s life.

One carer recalls how her foster child used to walk past her at the front door without a word, her face set in a frown. Over time, those moments began to change. “It made me smile when I heard my thirteen‑year‑old singing confidently in her room,” she recalls. Soon after, she began to say “hi” and “thank you” at the front door, small but powerful signs that she was starting to feel safer and more comfortable in her environment.

Croydon Council’s foster carers are fully supported at every stage of their journey, with a strong network of wraparound support in place.

The Council’s Horizon Hubs provide dedicated spaces where foster carers can connect with one another, share experiences, and access expert guidance from experienced carers.

A range of tailored support groups are available, including groups for male carers, for the families and friends of carers, and a reflective support group delivered in partnership with therapeutic services.

The Council is also working to retain its existing foster carers and invest in those already making a difference – by ensuring they have access to the resources, support and recognition they need and deserve.

To find out more, visit a Foster Care Fortnight drop-in event, or contact the Croydon fostering service directly to start a conversation.

“Foster carers come from all walks of life. You don’t need special powers to change a child’s life – just kindness, commitment and a willingness to open your heart and home.

“In Croydon, we value our foster carers and offer a strong package of support, training and allowances to help you every step of the way. If fostering is something you’ve ever considered, I encourage you to meet our team during Foster Care Fortnight and discover how you could make a real difference to a young person in our borough.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
