Croydon Council and leading housing association Moat Homes have successfully addressed persistent antisocial behaviour issues in the local community through effective partnership working.
Moat Homes, which owns and manages over 22,000 properties across the south-east, worked closely with Croydon Council to resolve ongoing complaints about a resident’s disruptive behaviour in communal areas including drug dealing, rough sleeping in communal areas, and misuse of residents’ door buzzers. Through their dedicated Tenancy Specialist team, Moat initially engaged directly with the resident to address the situation. Unfortunately, these early interventions proved unsuccessful.
Moat was supported by Croydon Council to secure a closure order, preventing the individual involved in antisocial behaviour from entering the property. During this time, a long-term solution was developed for the resident to receive appropriate support in the community. Neighbours have since reported significant improvements to their quality of life.
To ensure customers felt safe, Moat implemented additional measures, including installing CCTV in communal areas. The housing association maintained regular communication with residents, many of whom expressed appreciation for the action taken to restore their community to being a safe and enjoyable place to live.
Tenancy Specialist Manager, Kerrie Jenkins, said: “We’re proud to have worked alongside Croydon Council and the Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team to tackle the antisocial behaviour causing unrest in our community. We want our residents to feel safe, and so, with support from our partners, we were able to bring some much-needed respite. We want to ensure that our homes are allocated to those who will respect them, and who will respect their neighbours.”
This partnership approach aligns with Executive Mayor Perry’s Business Plan, which focuses on improving housing quality and making Croydon a place residents are proud to call home.
“Making sure our communities are safe places that people are proud to call home is a top priority. This successful collaboration with Moat demonstrates the importance of partnership working and how working together can tackle antisocial behaviour effectively.
“We want all residents to feel safe and secure in their homes, and that means working closely with landlords and housing providers to improve standards across Croydon. We will continue to support our communities and work with partners to create better, safer places to live”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
