Croydon residents are benefiting from a range of positive contributions from Croydon Council contractors thanks to improvements to the way contracts are procured and managed.
It’s been eighteen months since Croydon Council began working with Sureserve (previously known as K&T Heating), Wates, and Mears, to provide the essential housing repairs service across the borough. During that time each contractor has committed to and delivered several social value projects, contributing to real social, economic and environmental benefits.
Sureserve has supported eight local young people through apprenticeships, giving them a chance to learn and develop new skills. They have also worked on community projects, including installing heating systems in community hubs, so local residents can use them all year round for social events and training.
Wates sponsored an anti-knife crime event at Crystal Palace FC’s Selhurst Park Stadium, where over 100 young people took part in workshops and activities to raise awareness about the dangers of knife crime. Wates, alongside Sureserve, supported the Council in transforming a community space at Tamworth Estate, creating a place where residents can meet and connect.
Mears has redecorated a communal laundry at Ashwood Gardens, a sheltered development in New Addington to make it more welcoming for residents. They have also supported the Council with local charities like Good Food Matters, based in New Addington, to transform an unused space into a new kitchen and working area. This will help the charity provide more cooking courses.
“As part of my priority to get a grip on the Council’s finances, we have introduced much more robust contract management to ensure efficient, value for money services.
“The additional benefits we’ve seen from Sureserve, Wates, and Mears are a great example of how this is improving lives in Croydon.
“By creating job opportunities, improving local spaces, and investing in our community, we are building a stronger, healthier borough. This aligns with my commitment to make Croydon a borough of opportunity, where everyone has the chance to thrive now and in the future.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
