The council has released proposals to improve bus services, make roads safer and encourage more people to make healthier journeys this year and next.
Proposals include road safety projects – such as a new zebra crossing on Auckland Road and works to make it easier and safer to walk and cycle – including trials for new and existing School Street and Healthy Neighbourhood schemes.
New bus priority measures will mean faster journey times, and more reliable services on a key route into and through the town centre.
The proposals are part of the council’s Local Implementation Plan (LIP), which sets out how it plans to use Transport for London (TfL) funding to improve travel in Croydon. The LIP has been considered at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday (25 January) and will now be submitted to TfL.
Many of the projects are ongoing, such as the recently launched High Street works to improve bus journeys and help people walking and cycling into and around the town centre. To learn more and have your say, visit the council website.
Other projects covered include trials of 19 new Healthy School Street schemes, which will help pupils make safer, healthier journeys during the school run, and address parking and congestion concerns from residents living near schools.
The first nine of the schemes launched on Monday (23 January), meanwhile 10 further schemes are set to begin works before spring. More information on Healthy School Streets can be found on the council website.
The measures would be funded in part by Transport for London if the funding request is successful, and by other means, including the council’s Growth Zone.
