Croydon students were celebrating their successes this week as they collected their GCSE results – with borough-wide results up on pre-pandemic grades in 2019.
Oasis Academy student Nicolas Deeks, 16, from Purley, said: “I’m incredibly pleased that everything I’ve been working towards has paid off so well – it’s really worth it today and our teachers have been really helpful.”
Nicolas got 9s in biology, drama, English language, English literature, French, maths and media studies, 8s in chemistry, history and physics, and 7s in music and religious education. He plans to attend The BRIT School in Croydon to study theatre for two years and would like to become an actor.
Preet Thethi, 16, from Old Coulsdon, was delighted with her 11 GCSE results, all 9s, 8s and 7s. She plans to go to Reigate College to study economics, English literature and media studies.
Preet said: “I’m very pleased with my results and want to thank my family, friends and teachers for their support, as it has been quite intense. I hope to go to university or do a degree apprenticeship, to enter the marketing and business world.”
Catrin Green, Principal of Oasis Academy, said: “Today is one of the best days of the year, with loads of happy tears – the students have worked incredibly hard.”
James Simmonds, Oasis Academy tutor and mentor, added: “Our students have done so well and we’re really proud of them. The atmosphere today is really positive.”
Thomas More Catholic School in Purley also had cause to celebrate. Stephanie Opara, a Thomas More student from Thornton Heath achieved 11 GCSEs, all 9s, 8s and 7s. She plans to go to sixth form to study biology, chemistry and maths, and wants to study medicine or dentistry at university. Stephanie said: “I’m feeling really happy about my results, especially with science as I got 9s, which I want to do for A-level.”
Thomas More Catholic School Headteacher, Maryssa Dako, said: “We are delighted to celebrate with our class of 2024 who have received a superb set of GCSE results. Their accomplishment today will shape the rest of their lives.”

“Following on from the positive A-level results last week, our GCSE students from schools across Croydon have shown their dedication and their hard work has paid off. We are proud of them and, as always, grateful to the teachers and families who have supported them during their studies.
“Students who need advice deciding on their next steps after now they have their results, will be welcome to get in touch with their school or college staff who can help them decide what is right for them.”
