Debbie Jones, Croydon’s former Corporate Director for Children, Young People and Education, will be made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to children and families after being named in the New Year Honours List.

With a social care career spanning more than five decades, Debbie is highly regarded throughout the sector as a passionate and committed advocate for children and young people.

Before working at Croydon Council, until January this year, she held senior leadership positions as a Director of Children’s Services at several councils and at Ofsted, developing an outstanding track record in driving improvement.

Debbie joined Croydon in 2021 and, during her four years as corporate director, led children’s services through a programme of transformation. She oversaw the Council’s latest Ofsted inspection in 2024, achieving a ‘good’, with inspectors noting this was against a backdrop of severe financial challenge.

Debbie Jones said: “I am thrilled and humbled to receive this recognition. It has been the honour of my life to know the many children, young people and families I have been proud to serve and from whom I have learned so much. Also, to work with so many talented and committed colleagues along the way.

“Ultimately, one is judged by the difference you make to the lives of the children and young people you work with in the business of children’ services. For me it has been – and continues to be – an absolute privilege. What has driven me through the years is my passion and commitment to those young people and their families.”

Neil Salt, Constituency Officer for Streatham and Croydon North, Lambeth and Southwark Conservative Federation has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for political service.

“On behalf of the London Borough of Croydon, I want to congratulate Debbie on receipt of this honour from His Majesty The King. Her dedication to improving the lives of children and families in Croydon has been truly exceptional. Her leadership and commitment have left a lasting legacy in our borough, and this recognition is richly deserved.

“I would also like to congratulate Neil who has been recognised for the invaluable support and political service he has provided across Croydon with professionalism, commitment and good humour.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
