A Croydon resident has been given a career opportunity in customer service after the council took on contractors with social value commitments, leading to a new job path.
Three new contractors were procured last year as part of the transformation of Croydon’s housing service. As part of the agreements, the contractors had to demonstrate their commitment to upskilling and providing opportunities. They also provide benefits to Croydon residents such as sponsoring local events, and providing free furniture and equipment to local communities.
Wates Group recruited Croydon resident Louis Bienaime as an apprentice after he joined Croydon College’s Construkt course, which is sponsored by Wates Group. Before joining the apprenticeship he had been struggling to find employment.
Construkt supports those aged 16 to 25 years old from Black, Asian and minority backgrounds, particularly those not in education, employment or training. It provides pathways into the construction industry and engineering careers, builds confidence, and teaches team working.
Wates is one of the country’s leading development, building and property maintenance companies and takes on a number of apprentices under its social value commitments. These commitments look at how their work can improve the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of an area.
This support provided Louis with career advice on writing a CV and interview skills, as well as planning exercises and working in a team environment. He now works for Wates as a customer services apprentice on the council’s housing maintenance contract.
The 23-year-old mentioned the benefits the work has provided, saying that the course had given him the confidence to tackle the job market as well as the knowledge, skills and ambition to work in the construction sector. He added: “And the result is me now working for Wates.”
“We’re really pleased to see how our partnership with Wates has benefited our residents, as well as our local community and the economy. We all know how vital it is to get work experience, apprenticeships, and work opportunities, especially for those starting their careers, to improve their life paths.
“It’s vital that Croydon’s young people have opportunities to thrive, learn and fulfil their potential. I wish Louis every success as he proceeds in his career.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
