Dockless e-bike bicycle hire offers new way to make greener journeys in Croydon

As part of Croydon’s ambition to become London’s greenest borough hundreds of dockless electric bicycles will be arriving to offer residents and visitors new greener ways to travel.

The bikes, which can be accessed and locked using a mobile phone app, will be distributed at key areas across the borough making it easier to make more sustainable journeys.

Lime, a company already providing dockless ebikes in Milton Keynes, Brent, Ealing and Islington, will bring 200 ebikes to Croydon for a year-long trial starting in May.

If the trial goes well more bikes could come to the borough. Each one will be fitted with GPS, locks, a bell and front and rear lights and reflectors.

“Working with Lime will allow us to offer more sustainable transport options for residents.

“We’re working hard to make greener and more sustainable travel across Croydon easier for everyone.

“Electric bikes open up cycling to more people helping make journeys that would have been too long or too hilly easier.

“We want Croydon to become one of the greenest boroughs in London and bringing a scheme like this into the borough is one of the ways we are trying to achieve this.”

Busy areas with a high footfall can be excluded from the service to prevent them being blocked by bikes.

Lime will be able to collect and redistribute the bikes to key locations as required.

Jaanaki Momaya, General Manager for Lime UK, said: “We’re delighted to be expanding our shared, dockless, e-bike scheme to Croydon. Croydon is one of London’s most populous boroughs, and is very active in promoting cycling and other green travel options.

“It’s therefore exciting to be able to work together to bring our zero-emission transport offering to the borough and provide residents with a new sustainable way to travel.

“At Lime, we want to help Londoners tackle the dangerous levels of air pollution in the capital and empower residents to reduce the environmental impact of their journeys.”

Croydon has already introduced Schools Streets, bike hangars, electric vehicle charging points and more this year.
