Thousands of students across Croydon collected their GCSE and vocational qualifications yesterday after months of hard work and exams.
The majority of the borough’s secondary schools are reporting an improvement on last year’s results, with Croydon closing the gap with national results.
Dasko, of Orchard Park High School in Shirley, achieved an impressive five 9s and four 8s at GCSE. He is off to Dulwich College to study biology, chemistry and mathematics.
He said: “Today has been exciting and I’m proud of my results. I’ve received such encouragement and support here at Orchard Park and I’m so grateful. I thank all of my teachers and the support that they gave, but most importantly my family, especially my dad who has been my personal teacher for mathematics and science.”
At The Archbishop Lanfranc Academy, in Thornton Heath, there were also reasons to celebrate. Daniyal Ahmad achieved grades 9s and 8s and said: “I am very happy with my results. I hope to do something with biochemistry and mathematics.”
Tia Hance added: “I did better than I expected. I want to study law in the future, to become a solicitor or something like that.”
In New Addington, Meridian High School student Ijeoma Anyanwagu achieved multiple grade 9s and 8s and is going to study A-level chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics at sixth form.
Kylie Gardner achieved a strong mix of GCSE and vocational qualifications, including distinction and merit level vocational awards. Her results reflected her “hard work, resilience and determination”, the school said.
Whilst many young people will be celebrating today, results day can be an anxious time for some students. Anyone who is feeling disappointed or worried that they didn’t get the grades they needed should speak to their school, family and chosen sixth form college for advice.
See the GCSE results page on the Croydon Council website for details on careers advice and training providers. Students can also discuss their options with the Council’s Post 16 Participation Team. Call: 020 8726 7485, email: Post16@croydon.gov.uk or visit Young Croydon for more information.

“We are incredibly proud of all the students across Croydon who have received their GCSE and vocational qualification results today. It is fantastic to see their hard work pay off. We would also like to thank the teachers, families and carers who have supported them every step of the way.
“It is important that every child and young person in Croydon has the opportunity to thrive and fulfil their potential, whether that’s further education, training or work. If you didn’t get the grades you were expecting, don’t worry because support is available. Speak to your school and contact Young Croydon to discuss your next steps.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
