Give your views on Croydon’s plans for the future

Croydon Council wants to hear from residents, staff and partners on plans to get its finances back on track and focus on providing the best essential services we can, while living within our means.

From today (9 December), the council is asking people for feedback on initial savings proposals it has set out for 2021-24, to understand the impact they have on our communities and hear ideas about how it could do things differently. You can read an overview and give your views at www.croydon.gov.uk/savingsproposals. Anyone who needs help accessing the internet, or filling in the survey, can call 020 8604 7114, between 10am – 4pm, Mon – Fri.

The savings proposals are part of Croydon’s renewal plans, which outline how Croydon plans to tackle its financial challenges with a three year-improvement journey to become financially sustainable for the future.

Cabinet approved the renewal plans and gave the go-ahead to ask the public for feedback on the savings proposals on 25 November. The cabinet reports are published here, including the savings proposals for 2021/24 which are set out in full here.

The survey closes on 24 January, in time for feedback to inform the council’s budget proposals for 2021/22. Some of the proposals are ready, some of them need more work and others, such as changes to libraries, require full public consultations early next year.

“Croydon is facing unprecedented financial challenges and my priority is rebuilding a financially sustainable organisation, which provides the high-quality services and the value for money that residents expect and I am confident we will achieve that.

This means keeping our streets clean and safe, and tackling ingrained inequality and poverty by supporting and protecting our most vulnerable residents.

The scale of our financial challenges means we’re not going to be able to fix these problems overnight. We will have to make significant savings so that we can focus on delivering essential services well, while living within our means. I need to be open about the fact that we will need to stop doing some things and change the way we do others and there will be some difficult decisions ahead.

“That’s why it’s important that we hear your views on the changes we are proposing, so that we can understand how you think they might affect you and hear any other ideas before making our decisions. This is just the start of a conversation about Croydon’s future which will continue throughout our journey and we want everyone to take part, so that together we can shape the services our communities need in line with the funding that we have.”

Councillor Hamida Ali, leader of the council
