Good progress being made on Surrey Street improvements

Good progress is being made on the improvement works to Surrey Street and the project remains on schedule to finish in early June.

Council contractors have been on site since 27 March, and have so far undertaken a range of works as part of the £1.1m renovation of the 700-year-old market. These include new levelled pavements, improved drainage and new cabling to support an upgraded street lighting scheme.

While the works are ongoing, market traders have temporarily relocated to North End and hot food stalls are trading from The Queen’s Gardens. The short-term move has enabled the traders to continue working while an intensive programme of works is carried out, and will also help to ensure the improvements will be completed as safely and as quickly as possible. Shops and cafes along Surrey Street remain open to the public and are trading as normal.

The revamp of the popular market will create a vibrant, flexible market space and a more pedestrian-friendly environment. New street lighting and seating is to be installed, along with improved signage to assist visitors in locating the market from the town centre.

Councillor Mark Watson, cabinet member for economy and jobs

“I am really pleased with the progress being made on Surrey Street and would like to thank everyone for their patience while these crucial works are carried out.

“The contractors are continuing to work hard to deliver the scheme, so the new upgraded and lively market that will rival some of the best in London, can reopen as quickly as possible.”
