I hope everyone has had a good week and those of you who managed to stay up last Sunday enjoyed England’s fantastic game of football against Mexico. Let’s hope for another outstanding performance from the team against Norway this weekend.
Update on East Croydon station bridge
I’m really pleased to share that we’ve reached a funding agreement to improve the East Croydon station bridge, working with Network Rail and Menta Regeneration, the developers of The Blossoms on Cherry Orchard Road. This means building work can begin this summer to open the pedestrian through route across the bridge. This will make it much quicker and easier to get around the town. It will connect the east and west sides of the station, providing residents of Addiscombe and surrounding areas with a direct route into the town centre. It will also give access to the platform from the western side.
It is one of several projects Croydon is delivering as part of our wider regeneration programme, helping to transform the town centre and make it a better place to live, work and visit. Read more
Zero-tolerance in action
We have some more positive updates from our zero-tolerance approach to tackling antisocial behaviour. You may remember the rogue garage in Parchmore Road, Thornton Heath, which we managed to close following reports of verbal abuse, threatening behaviour and other issues. I am pleased to share that the closure order has now been extended until 6 October 2026, providing continued reassurance for the local community. Find out more.
We have also secured a borough-wide injunction against a man whose ongoing antisocial behaviour caused significant disruption for residents and businesses, particularly in the West Croydon area. The injunction bans him from entering any part of Croydon and gives the Police the power to arrest him without a warrant if he breaches the order.
These actions are part of our work to improve safety across the borough. In Croydon town centre, the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) has helped reduce antisocial behaviour by 24% since its introduction in 2022. There is no place for behaviour that intimidates residents, businesses or visitors, and we will continue to take robust action against those responsible.
Tackling climate change
This week we published our first Climate Action Report which highlights the wide range of practical measures we have taken to tackle climate change. From new cycle infrastructure, bus priority schemes and electric vehicle charging points, to flood management and sustainable drainage projects. We have also introduced the Croydon Healthy Homes service, which helps households improve energy efficiency and reduce bills. Read the report in full here.
Our new artwork in College Square
Last week I mentioned the new artwork being created in College Square, next to Croydon College. It has now been completed and I’m sure you will agree the results are wonderful. The street art has transformed what was once a grey stretch of pavement into a bright and welcoming space, inspired by local architecture and well-loved Croydon buildings.
Funded through the Home Office’s measures to prevent crime, the project has also given local students the opportunity to work alongside professional artists, develop new skills and make their own contribution to the town centre.
Enjoy Centre Court in our own backyard
Who needs SW19 when we’ve got CR0? If you haven’t visited Centre Court Croydon yet, now is the perfect time as the Wimbledon finals are this weekend. Croydon BID has created a stylish viewing area in Caithness Walk, where you can watch all the tennis action on a big screen, for free.
There’s something for families too, with a screening of the popular children’s film Lilo & Stitch on Saturday, which promises to be a lovely family occasion. Find out more.
Have a great weekend all and remember to take care in the sun. Come on England!
