This week, I welcomed the government’s announcement to extend the much-needed Household Support Fund, which was due to end in September. I had previously written to the government about the fund’s importance in supporting the most vulnerable in our borough, emphasising the need for continued assistance for the many residents facing cost-of-living pressures. During a visit to Old Coulsdon Centre for the Retired I discussed the Winter Fuel Allowance with local residents and listened to their views.
Emergency Services Day
On Monday, we honoured the brave men and women who serve in our emergency services on Emergency Services Day, including the staff of St John Ambulance, RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), Met Police Special Constables as well as the Met Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service and our NHS partners. They are the heart of our community, ready to help in our time of need – thanks to all of you!
Develop Croydon London gathering
On Tuesday, I spoke at the London gathering of the Develop Croydon Forum, highlighting the potential opportunities of Croydon, to developers and investors. I referenced work being undertaken on the Town Centre Regeneration Strategy, an Inward Investment Plan, as well the economic analysis work for the town centre. There were many positive conversations about Croydon’s bright future.
Open House Festival
Artwork has been commissioned by the Council as part of this year’s Open House Festival – with an unusual twist. Croydon Unlocked, by artist and photographer Rachel Adams, runs from Saturday 14 September until 2 February 2025. It shows the secret life of some of our borough’s most extraordinary buildings from the perspective of those who look after them – such as caretakers, security guards and cleaners. I’ll be interested to see these hidden histories and invite everyone to look at the exciting programme of building tours and events for this year’s Open House – including here at our Town Hall.
Have a good weekend.
Jason Perry
Executive Mayor of Croydon
