In recent months, we’ve been supporting the Metropolitan Police with their latest trial of static Live Facial Recognition Technology (LFR) in our town centre. The Met has already been using LFR on mobile vans but the latest pilot uses cameras attached to existing structures, such as lampposts, to help officers identify individuals on police watchlists.
This has led to more than 100 arrests in just three months, many linked to serious offences, including violence against women and girls. This shows how innovative technology can play a real role in tackling crime and keeping our communities safe. Our residents told us they support the use of this technology and I’m proud that Croydon is helping to lead the way.
Planning Inspectorate update
We have received some welcome news from the Planning Inspectorate, which has confirmed that our Croydon Local Plan can move forward to the next stage.
The Local Plan promotes sustainable development across Croydon, emphasising design over density, and respecting local character. They aim to meet London Plan housing targets whilst safeguarding green spaces and creating vibrant, well-designed places where people can live, work and visit. Thank you to everyone who has helped shape the plan so far. We will be listening to residents again as we move ahead.
Croydon has always been a place of history, heart and hustle, a story built over centuries. This plan is about making sure that story continues. Find out more.
Croydon’s free Multi-Sport SEND festival is coming
With the February half-term fast approaching, I am delighted to share news of our annual free festival of sport for disabled children and young people aged five to 25. The festival is on Thursday 19 February at New Addington Leisure Centre. Delivered in partnership with Access Sport, the event gives young people the opportunity to try a wide range of activities in a welcoming and inclusive setting.
Young people and their parents have spoken very positively about their experiences, and we’ve even seen medal success at the London Youth Games. I would encourage anyone who is eligible to sign up. Watch a short video for a flavour of what’s on offer and find out how to register here.
Looking ahead
I held a casework surgery this morning at Woodlands Family Hub. I really value these in-person surgeries as an opportunity to hear directly from residents about the issues that matter most to you. I will be holding further surgeries in Norbury and New Addington soon, so please look out for more details.
I wish you all a good weekend.

Executive Mayor of Croydon
