I was honoured to be at the Museum of Croydon last night for the launch of the new Citizen UK: Croydon’s Caribbean Influencers exhibition, part of our London Borough of Culture programme. Open now until 23 June, the exhibition explores the impact that residents with Caribbean heritage, past and present, have had on Croydon and how they have helped to shape our borough today. Our year as London Borough of Culture is an opportunity for us to all look to the future as we kickstart our borough’s regeneration, but it is also an opportunity for us to reflect on our past. It’s time for our communities to tell their stories, for us to celebrate their contributions to our borough’s rich culture, and together, restore pride in Croydon’s unique identity.
It was also a privilege to attend the Iftar organised by the Dialogue Society last night, bringing together those of all faiths and none to discuss the pressing issues of the day.
Thanks to everyone at All Saints C of E Primary School holiday club in Beulah Hill, Upper Norwood (pictured), for welcoming me this week. Throughout the Easter holidays, thousands of children and young people have enjoyed free activities and healthy meals at our holiday clubs. The council has worked with a huge number of providers across the borough to make sure that families can access clubs close to home, helping parents and carers while school is out. To all those returning to school next week, I hope you’ve had a restful break.
Finally, I would also like to wish a happy Vaisakhi to our Sikh community as well as a happy Sinhalese and Tamil New Year to all those celebrating.
