Mayor Perry – listening to Croydon

It’s great to see the preparations for the King’s Coronation under way all over Croydon. Our Town Hall is looking fantastic decked out in bunting, with Union Jack flags along Katharine Street and tonight, we’ll be lighting up the building red, white and blue in honour of this historic event.

It is really special that we have 120 Big Lunch street parties taking place throughout our borough over the bank holiday. Once again, Croydon’s fantastic community spirit is in full swing, and that’s something we can all be truly proud of.

Our grounds maintenance team have been out in full force to get our parks and green spaces looking their best for picnics and other outdoor celebrations – a big thank you to them. The improved grass-cutting service that I introduced last year is now under way for the summer season. I reinstated a four-to-six-week schedule because I share residents’ views that it is a top priority to get Croydon looking cleaner.

On the same note, the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) I approved earlier this year is now in effect in the town centre, helping to keep our streets safe and welcoming for residents and visitors. Clean, safe streets are a top priority for me – delivering them well is the starting point for restoring pride in our borough.

If you’re attending or hosting a Coronation party, or simply spending some time with family and friends over the Bank Holiday, have a great time. If you are heading up to central London to watch the Coronation, take care and check the travel advice from the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) before you leave – you can follow them on social media @DCMS.

I’m really looking forward to joining the special choral Evensong for the Coronation at Croydon Minster on Sunday – whatever you do, enjoy your celebrations.

Jason Perry
