It was a privilege to come together with the Croydon community yesterday to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. We honoured the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom as we raised the VE Day Flag outside the Town Hall, held a two-minute silence, and took part in the nationwide Beacon of Light. It was also great to see neighbourhoods marking this important date with street parties across the borough.

You can find out about Croydon’s significant role in World War II on new billboards we have put up in the High Street near the Town Hall to mark VE Day 80 and celebrate our borough’s history. You can see old photos of street parties and of the Town Hall on 8 May 1945, which became the centre for celebrations as residents listened on loudspeakers to Prime Minister Winston Churchill announcing a ceasefire throughout Europe. ‘Good’ Ofsted for Calleydown

Calleydown Shortbreak Children’s Home in New Addington has maintained it’s ‘good’ rating by Ofsted inspectors for the fourth consecutive year. The residential home provides short breaks for children and young people with severe learning difficulties in a fun and homely environment, giving them and their families respite. Many of Croydon’s staff have been working at the home for a long time and really get to know the children so they can provide the best possible care. I’m very proud of their achievements and we will continue to work to make sure children with special needs and their families are well supported. Find out more.

Crackdown on Blue Badge fraud

Croydon residents have told me how frustrating it is when Blue Badges are used fraudulently by motorists. I am pleased to report that we are taking action against it and anyone misusing a Blue Badge in Croydon should prepare for their vehicle to be towed or taken to court. Using a Blue Badge illegally is totally unfair on people with disabilities and we will do everything in our powers to make sure fraudulent activity is acted upon. Read the story.

Playground opening

I was delighted to open a playground in Wilford Road Recreation Ground with new equipment as well as a reconditioned rocking horse from the 1968, proudly wearing Crystal Palace FC colours. I also visited Wandle Park, where we have added new pieces of play equipment for the Under 5s after listening to residents. We are aiming to install five playgrounds across Croydon each year – making play spaces safer and more enjoyable for children.

New borough commander for Croydon

Finally, I’d like to congratulate Detective Chief Superintendent Nick Blackburn on becoming the new borough commander for Croydon Police. We work very closely with our partners at the police and I look forward to working together in keeping Croydon safe.

Have a good weekend.
