Mayoral year benefits charities to the tune of £51,000

Two charities are each more than £25,000 better off thanks to the generosity of local businesses and individuals.

Age UK Croydon and Macmillan Cancer Support were the nominated charities of Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed during her year as Mayor of Croydon in 2014/15.

Her fund-raising endeavours – which included dining events, sports days and tea parties – raised £51,000, the sum to be equally divided between the two charities.

Councillor Shahul-Hameed said: “I’d like to thank everybody who helped raise this fantastic amount during my year as Mayor.

“If it wasn’t for all those people who came along to the various events, this money would probably never have found its way to two such highly deserving courses.

“Of course, it wasn’t just about fund raising – there was also a lot of fun had as we made our way to the final figure. Thank-you, everybody.”
