New Covid-19 Local Testing Centre to open in Croydon

A new Local Testing Centre is opening in Croydon Sports Arena car park, Croydon, to boost testing capacity and make it easier for residents with any of the Covid-19 symptoms to get a test.

Local Testing Centres are operated by the government. They are walk-through and can be accessed without a car, on foot or by bicycle. Anyone with any of the Covid-19 symptoms – a high temperature; a new continuous cough, a loss of or change to their sense of smell or test – can get a free swab test that takes less than a minute with the results available within 72 hours. Appointments must be booked in advance at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

Croydon Sports Arena car park testing centre will be in full operation from Saturday 30 January, when it will be open from 9am-8pm, seven days a week. Those being tested at the site will be required to follow public health measures including social distancing, not travelling to the site by public transport or taxi, practising good personal hygiene and wearing a face covering, including while travelling to and from the centre.

The government’s operators, Deloitte, will arrive on site to build the centre on Thursday 28 January. During the build, Belmont Road will be closed to enable construction vehicles to safely enter and exit the site, however residents will still have access. Two parking bays will be suspended near the junction with Albert Road and three will be suspended near the junction with Portland Road, as well as two on Portland Road itself. These are temporary measures only, to allow the site build to take place

This will be the second Covid-19 Local Testing Centre in Croydon. A Local Testing Centre has been operating in Central Parade, New Addington since September 2020.  A regional testing site has also opened on Beddington Lane with capacity for 1800 tests per day.

Residents with any of the Covid-19 symptoms can also book a home test online or by calling 119.

If you have any of the Covid-19 symptoms, getting tested will help to protect our communities – however the most important thing is that you self-isolate for 10 days, and leave home only to get a test

The NHS Test and Trace Service will ask anyone testing positive who they have been in contact with to prevent the spread of infection. Anyone testing positive must self-isolate for 10 days from the first day of their symptoms or if no syptoms from the date of the positive test

Please continue to follow the advice on hands, face, space, replace – keep washing your hands, cover your face in enclosed spaces, keep your distance from others and when you have to be indoors with others outside your household, keep windows open.

If we all take these steps, together we can help to keep Croydon safe.
