New mobile sites in Croydon to offer rapid Covid-19 tests

Croydon Council is beginning a new phase in its bid to drive down Covid-19 rates by getting more people in the borough to regularly take a rapid lateral flow test.

Pop-up mobile testing sites will be set up at various community locations, starting outside Croydon Voluntary Action (CVA) on London Road every Wednesday and Friday until mid-August. Details for the roll-out of more pop-up sites will soon be announced.

A team from the council will offer people a rapid lateral flow test on the day, with results provided in 30 minutes. They will also hand out home testing kits, information on the vaccines and the benefits of regularly testing for the virus, whether or not you have symptoms. Around one in three people with Covid-19 have no symptoms and are spreading it without knowing.

People are encouraged to get tested twice a week, particularly anyone who frequently leaves their home.

The mobile testing teams will also provide information on infection prevention and control, support available to those who need to isolate, and health and wellbeing advice that helps to prevent poor outcomes from Covid-19.

“With the lifting of restrictions on 19 July, we all need to do everything we can to ensure we take this next step safely and prevent infection levels rising in our borough. By taking our rapid Covid testing out into our communities, we’re making it even easier for you to test regularly so you can be sure you’re not spreading the virus without knowing. Our teams will offer help and advice about testing and what to do if you test positive, including how to access self-isolation payments if you’re eligible.”

Councillor Janet Campbell, cabinet member for families, health and social care

Rachel Flowers, Croydon’s Director of Public Health, said: “Covid-19 is still out there, so as more things reopen it’s more important than ever that we protect ourselves and others from infection. We cannot get complacent about our safety and preventing the spread of the virus. Regular rapid testing is a key part of our defence as it helps to reduce the transmission of Covid-19.”
