Croydon’s newest university has opened its door with more than 350 students starting their degrees this week.
The brand new LSBU campus based in Electric House in the heart of the town centre will teach the next generation of nurses and business leaders
It offers five different courses, including degrees in nursing, accounting, business management and provides a Masters for chiropractors – the only university in the capital to do so.
The campus in Wellesley road has a lecture theatre, classrooms and a café. The building also includes nursing skills suites that replicate hospital wards.
The opening is an exciting step for the partnership between the university and the council, and part of the borough’s plans for a creative campus to offer a mix of business, culture and learning to boost the borough’s regeneration and career prospects for Croydon’s 93,000 people under 18.
David Phoenix, LSBU Vice-Chancellor, said, “Croydon is one of London’s biggest growth centres and we’re delighted to open its first university campus. LSBU Croydon will change the lives of local people by providing first class health care services to treat residents and support for businesses in Croydon to grow.”
“It was fantastic to visit Croydon’s new university campus and it marks an exciting step in our partnership with LSBU creating a wealth of learning, training and career opportunities for Croydon residents of all ages, particularly our young people.
“Located in the heart of our town centre, the new campus will bring a significant boost to our economy, as our businesses benefit from links with the university and upskills our workforce and welcome more visitors to our town. I’m really delighted to welcome LSBU, and all their students, to Croydon.”
Councillor Hamida Ali, leader of the council
Councillor Manji Shahul-Hameed, Cabinet Member for Communities, Safety and Business Recovery, said:
“The opening of the new LSBU campus here in Croydon is central to our vision for the future of the borough and is more important than ever as we recover from effects of Covid-19.
“I am honoured to have been part of the process from the beginning of the planning stages to the opening of this fantastic campus. I am really looking forward to watching the next generation of nurses and business leaders graduate here at Croydon.”
