Pickleball on its way to Wandle Park

With over 2 million players, Pickleball is said to be the fastest-growing sport in North America – and now it’s coming to Wandle Park.

Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Fresh lines have been added to the park’s tennis courts to allow the game to be played and the new facility will formally open at 11.15 tomorrow morning (Saturday 13 May).

There have been indoor taster sessions available at Waddon Leisure Centre for the last few weeks, but now the summer is approaching players will be able to compete outside.

Andrew Dickinson, volunteer and learning officer at the council, said: “It’s really fun for children and younger people to play but it’s also extremely popular with older men and women who used to play similar sports like tennis, squash and badminton but have stopped for various reasons.”

Wandle Valley Trust are funding the sessions and paying for the equipment after members of South London Area Pickleball (SLAP) approached the council with the idea of setting up the courts.
