Croydon has set out plans to harness £9m transport investment to support the borough’s growth, boost connectivity and create opportunities for all.

Better bus journeys, safer streets and new pedestrian and cycle routes connecting Croydon’s green spaces are included in the proposals for the next two years.

The plans support The Croydon Growth Plan 2025 and Town Centre Vision, launched by Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, earlier this year.

They align to Mayor Perry’s priorities of a cleaner, safer Croydon and restoring pride.

The Council’s cabinet, approved proposals for Croydon’s submission to Transport for London (TfL) for just over £6.9m investment in better travel over the next two financial years.

The proposals are Croydon’s Local Implementation Plan (LIP), which all London boroughs must submit, setting out how they will deliver the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy.

Alongside the LIP funding, Cabinet also agreed to spend just over £2.1m from section 106 money to boost the borough’s transport. Section 106 money comes from developers and is used to reduce the transport impacts of a new development on the local communities.

Croydon’s plan includes better pedestrian and cycle links through and between parks. The planned routes run through Lloyd Park and Addington Park (£1m), Lloyd Park to South Norwood Country Park (£500,000) and Mitcham Common to Wandle Park (£500,000).

£3,410,000 has been allocated to reducing traffic speeds and volumes, and to promote active travel by walking and cycling across the borough. £650,000 has been budgeted for improving road safety in Portland Road in South Norwood.

Public transport will be boosted by £1,705,000 for the creation and improvement of bus lanes and making bus stops more accessible. As well as £477,000 for improving the capacity of West Croydon, East Croydon and Reedham train stations.

There will also be help for owners of electric vehicles with £120,000 to increase the number of publicly accessible electric vehicle charging points. This supports the transition to electric vehicles as part of Croydon’s strategy for a sustainable, integrated transport system.

“We are unlocking our borough’s potential through the Croydon Growth Plan, investing in improving our town centre, helping high streets to thrive and creating the right conditions for success. I am determined that we maximise every opportunity to support this growth and create new opportunities for everyone in Croydon.

“Croydon’s connectivity is one of its greatest strengths and our proposals set out how we will maximise TfL’s investment to build on this. I want residents to have better journeys and our communities to enjoy safer, healthier lives, whilst making sure businesses get the infrastructure they need to grow.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
