A programme of weekly events that will take place in Surrey Street alongside the Sunday market has been revealed for the first time.
The Sunday market returns this week with a variety of new offerings for customers, including street food, homemade cakes, hand crafted tarts and artisan bread; as well as flowers, stationery and arts and crafts stalls.
The return of Sunday trading will be celebrated with Little Canada comes to Croydon, an event commemorating the 150th anniversary of Canada. Taking place from 11.30am to 8pm, the event will bring stalls of Canadian street food including fresh waffles, pop-up log cabin restaurants serving poutine – a popular Quebecois dish made with French fries and cheese curds and perogies – hot cheesy dumplings to Surrey Street.
Canadian craft beer, cocktails and whiskies will also be on offer, as well as live music performances from a host of musicians, including Europe’s best known Michael Bublé tribute act. There will also be an opportunity for two lucky people to win a trip to Toronto.
The celebration will be the first in a diverse programme of events running alongside the Sunday market each week. The line-up includes interactive street theatre, an entrepreneurs market, outdoor musical entertainment and Christmas-themed events for when the festivities draw near.
Councillor Mark Watson, cabinet member for economy and jobs
“The return of the Sunday market to Surrey Street is fantastic for Croydon and I’m delighted a varied programme of events will also be available each week for shoppers to enjoy. This adds to the success of the regenerated regular market that operates Monday to Saturday.
“The programme of events will support our goal of not only making the Surrey Street a place for people to explore a range of market delights, but also a destination people can shop, eat, enjoy entertainment and view street art.”
Events are still to be added to the programme, but to see what has been confirmed so far visit https://www.croydon.gov.uk/business/markets-0/surrey-street-sundays
