Residents urged to follow new measures in fight against Covid-19

Following a sharp rise in coronavirus rates across the country the government has announced a range of new measures to keep the virus under control.

And with Croydon’s risk factor being raised from low to medium last week, residents are being reminded of the day-to-day actions they can take to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Rachel Flowers, Croydon’s director of public health, said: “We have all seen the devastating damage this virus can do, so with positive cases on the rise it is vital that we act now to protect ourselves and our loved ones. That’s why I’m calling on everyone in Croydon to follow the new guidelines put in place to limit the spread of the virus and ultimately save lives.”

The new measures include:

  • Work from home, wherever possible
  • Pubs, bars and restaurants must close at 10pm and offer table-service only (except for takeaways).
  • Wearing a face covering is now compulsory for staff and customers in shops and hospitality venues, unless you are eating or drinking or are exempt. Drivers and users of taxis and private hire vehicles must also wear a mask.
  • People will be required by law to self-isolate when instructed to by NHS Test and Trace. Those on lower incomes who cannot work from home and have lost income as a result will be supported by a payment of £500.
  • The Rule of Six (not meeting in groups larger than six) has been extended to indoor team sports.
  • A maximum of 15 people can attend a wedding, and up to 30 for a funeral.
  • Stricter penalties – the fine for failing to wear a face covering or breaking the Rule of Six is now £200. People who fail to self-isolate will face a fine of up to £10,000. Businesses will also be fined if they breach their legal obligations.

In addition, residents are encouraged to keep following public health advice to protect themselves, friends and family:

  • Hands, face, space – wash hands or sanitise regularly, wear a face covering when necessary and keep your distance from others.
  • If you have any Covid-19 symptoms – a new, continuous cough; a high temperature; a loss of taste or smell – you must self-isolate immediately and get tested. You should only leave your home if you need to get a test. You can book a FREE test online at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119. Please only book a test if you have symptoms.
