Street party celebrates Surrey Street reopening

A fantastic street party packed with performances of singing, music and dance marked the reopening of Surrey Street at the weekend.

The well-attended event followed the recent completion of the first phase of the £1.1m works which led to improvements such as levelled pavements, the widening of the footpaths and the installation of new street lighting, to create a vibrant and multi-use market space.

Celebrations kicked off with a performance from Celtic band Homebrood who paraded from North End to Surrey Street. Indian dance group Aspara Art and singers Dan Olsen, Rachel Sian, The Lollipops and Serenade Band also took to the stage during the event.

Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Toni Letts, Councillor Mark Watson, Rise Gallery’s Kevin Zuchowski-Morrison and Croydon Central MP Sarah Jones gave speeches about their own experiences of Surrey Street. Market traders Hameed and Rosanna also addressed the crowd and called on the community to get behind Surrey Street Market by shopping there.

In addition to the performances, visitors enjoyed art workshops run by Rise Gallery and were able to learn more about the new street art installed in a bid to make Surrey Street a new destination for art lovers.

Councillor Mark Watson, cabinet member for economy and jobs

“The Surrey Street launch was a fantastic way to celebrate the improvements that have been made and the return of the 700-year-old market to its rightful place in the town centre.

“I’ve had lots of excellent feedback from people who have praised the art installations and said the changes have made the market more accessible. I’d encourage residents and Croydon visitors alike to come to Surrey Street whether it’s to shop, look at the art or relax, and help make the street the beating heart of Croydon.”
