Ten school street schemes to return from today

Ten School Streets will be returning today as the council opens a fresh round of consultation on the schemes.

The council has introduced Schools Streets across the borough to encourage healthy journeys during the busy school run, reducing air pollution and improving safety around schools.

Ten of the schemes were temporarily paused due to the expiry of a Traffic Order on 28 February. The schemes could not be made permanent at that time as a result of Covid-19 lockdowns affecting the previous consultation period.

The ten sites are:

  • Christ Church CofE Primary School
  • Downsview Primary School
  • Ecclesbourne Primary School
  • Harris Primary Academy Haling Park
  • Keston Primary School
  • Harris Primary Academy Croydon
  • Oasis Academy Reylands
  • Ridgeway Primary School
  • St Thomas Becket Catholic Primary
  • St Joseph’s Catholic Junior School

Following feedback from the previous consultation, the council has also decided to implement extra signage at Haling Road, Keston Ave, Montpelier Road, and Southcote Road. The signage will go beyond legal requirements, to offer motorists more advanced warning.

Motorists should be aware that the return of the schemes means that from today, driving through these streets during the restricted school run period will incur a penalty charge notice.

The new consultation will run from today (Monday 25 April 2022) to 25 October 2022, and will provide an opportunity for the public to give feedback on the schemes. Responses can be submitted online via the council website or by writing to: Order Making Section, Parking Design Team, Sustainable Communities, Regeneration & Economic Recovery, Croydon Council, Bernard Weatherill House, 8 Mint Walk Croydon CR0 1EA.

The council is working with Transport for London on plans to add new School Streets this year, and more information will be available in the coming weeks.
