Following the successful opening of a new pedestrian crossing on Wellesley Road on 3 December, preparations are underway to open the pedestrian through-route at East Croydon station – with work anticipated to begin early next year.
Croydon Council is progressing arrangements with its partners to open the footbridge linking the east and west side of East Croydon Station, so it is opened to the public as soon as possible.
Croydon has been working with Network Rail and developers Menta Regeneration to agree costs and responsibility for repairs and future maintenance for the footbridge, and the parties are now in the process of agreeing legal terms.
The Council and Network Rail will fund the required bridge improvements and repairs. Menta Regeneration is funding the works to connect the bridge to Menta’s public realm, which has already been completed as part of its Cherry Orchard Road development.
Network Rail has appointed a main contractor to carry out the works once all agreements are in place. It is hoped that works will start on site early next year.
The Council supports a fully accessible station entrance on both sides and is continuing to work with its partners on behalf of residents and businesses.
The opening of the bridge will be another key milestone in improving connectivity as part of the regeneration of the town centre.
Executive Mayor, Jason Perry is driving forward £40m of projects to make the town centre more welcoming and accessible for everyone who lives, works and visits Croydon.
The 10 projects include improvements in George Street and Dingwall Road, which are already underway.
