Vaisakhi 2017: A message from the leader of Croydon Council

I am delighted to pass on my best wishes to all Croydon residents celebrating Vaisakhi.

Also known as Baisakhi, the date marks the Sikh new year, and commemorates the formation of Sikhism. It is, additionally, a spring harvest festival for Sikhs, and is one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar. This year it will be celebrated on 14 April.

The date is also celebrated by Hindus and Buddhists for different reasons, including the start of a new year. It is a time for reflecting on the past, and looking ahead to the future.

I believe that, by celebrating Vaisakhi and other major faith events together, we come to better understand each other’s customs and traditions, and develop a culture of mutual respect.

Happy Vaisakhi!

Councillor Tony Newman
Leader of Croydon Council
