Major improvement works that will boost the street scene in South Norwood are now under way.
The work programme will firstly focus on Station Road, followed by Market Parade on Portland Road and will help create a more pleasant environment, whilst also giving pedestrians using the area a greater priority.
Improvements to the area include the removal of old street furniture, new kerbs and paving and the installation of trees and seats to boost the public spaces along Market Parade.
The space along Station Road will also be enhanced to create a better setting for the market and to enable public events. New trees will also be planted and improved cycle facilities will also be available outside of Norwood Junction Station.
The council gathered local people’s views on how the area could be improved during consultation events held previously in South Norwood, and their feedback has influenced the planned works.
The improvement works which are scheduled to finish in July, are part of a £1.65m project to improve the area in a joint effort between Croydon Council and Transport for London. The project is part of the Delivering for Croydon programme which aims to improve the borough’s streets, squares and open spaces.
While the construction work is under way, parking bays and bus stops close to the works site will be temporarily suspended to keep the area safe.

“We’ve listened to what residents and local businesses had to say and have included some of these in our works. The improved public realm works will enhance South Norwood’s character, making it a more attractive place in which to live, visit, work and socialise.”
These works complement other regeneration projects already under way in South Norwood. All three winning businesses of the council’s pop-up premises competition are now operating in Portland Road and discussions have begun to hold the popular Streets Festival in the centre for a third year.
