Works to improve journeys on bus, bike and foot through central Croydon

Roadworks are underway to improve bus journeys and make it quicker, easier and safer to travel around the town centre on foot and by bike.

The works are the next stage in the pedestrianisation of Croydon High Street and will include a raft of measures to improve journeys for all road users.

Bus stops on High Street for services heading southbound will be reopened and new one-way systems on Katharine Street and High Street will mean shorter bus routes through the town centre.

To make it safer and easier to walk and cycle around the area, a new crossing will be added to High Street by Robert Street, and the existing zebra crossing on Katharine Street will be moved to the end of the road, at the corner of The Spread Eagle pub.

For the part of the High Street that is already pedestrianised, access will be improved by levelling the pavement and removing the gates.

Better vehicle access for local businesses and residents is expected through a trial of two-way traffic on Fell Road. From 17 February, Fell Road, from Mint Walk to the flyover, will become two-way for traffic giving access to drivers to turn left into the road from the flyover.

Works are taking place now until 17 February with the following road closures in place:

  • 4 January – 10 February: Closure of Katharine Street from Fell Road/St George’s Walk junction, to the High Street, outside The Spread Eagle pub
  • 18 January – 17 February: Closure of High Street from Katharine Street to Whitgift Street

Residents, businesses and visitors to the area can provide feedback on these changes through an online survey, available at croydon.gov.uk/high-street-croydon. The survey will close on 18 August 2023.

Further details of the project and details of the diversions in place while roads are closed can also be found at croydon.gov.uk/high-street-croydon.

Jason Perry

“I’ve listened to residents’ concerns around bus connections in the town centre and it’s great that these changes will improve bus routes and journey times for bus services from both the north and south of the borough.

“I’m also pleased that the new cycle lanes and crossings will improve road safety for everyone, and that we will see improved access to Fell Road by car for residents and businesses.

“Croydon is one of the most connected boroughs in London and I am pleased that we are taking steps to improve these internal connections too, creating the vibrant town centre that we all know it can be.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
