Adult education open day in New Addington

Adults looking for ways to boost their chances of getting a job by developing new skills are invited to an open day at the Croydon Adult Learning and Training (Calat) in New Addington on 11 July.

Between 9.30am and 3pm, there will be sessions on finding out how a Calat course provided by Croydon Council could help find people a job with a difference. Other parts of the day will focus on business computing, with an assessment of skills and a chance to see demonstrations of commonly used office software.

“Although thousands of people use Calat every year, there are still plenty more who could benefit from its services. I’d encourage anyone who thinks they could benefit from learning some new skills to go along for a taster session.”

Councillor Alisa Flemming, cabinet member for children, young people and learning

The New Addingron centre is part of the library building at the south end of Central Parade and is easily accessible from elsewhere in the borough by bus or tram.

Calat and its learners have won numerous adult education awards during their 70 years in operation and the service is one of the largest in the country. Operating from centres across the borough, Calat offers some 500 courses in subjects ranging from business skills, English and maths, through to a variety of arts and crafts courses for those looking to make more productive use of their leisure time.

As a taster of the crafts skills on offer, those attending the open day can try their hand at floristry by creating a stunning buttonhole or a contemporary flower arrangement.

People can search for available courses on the Calat website or pick up a 2017-18 prospectus from one of the centres or any of Croydon’s libraries.
