Croydon International Mela gets ready to wow

Wandle Park will become a blaze of colour, music and dance in just over a month’s time, when the second annual Croydon International Mela takes place from 1-8pm on Sunday 15 July.

The Mela will bring together international acts, local artists, street theatre and the delicious Tastes of Asia food market. Entrance will be free of charge, and organisers hope to exceed the 8,500 people who attended throughout the day last year.

Headline acts confirmed so far include British singer-songwriter Arjun, known for his fusion of R&B with elements of South Asian music. Performing with the London Mozart Players with orchestration by Fiona Brice, he’ll be performing a greatest hits set as well as tracks from his latest album.

Also headlining will be Zack Knight, whose most recent song “Bom Diggy Diggy” has become a YouTube hit with more than 200 million views, as well as rising star Ezu from South London.

Local partnerships will play a big part in the day’s programme. Croydon-based dance company Beeja will be presenting a fantastic dance programme at the Bandstand, and Apsara Arts is working with Emergency Exit Arts (EEA) to create Magic Mela, a special area of performance and activities aimed at families and children.

“The Mela is a major event in the borough’s cultural calendar, embodying the creativity and diversity for which Croydon is well-known. The council is proud to be supporting this event, which promises a fun day out for everyone.”

Councillor Oliver Lewis, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport
