Croydon photography exhibition honours the work of black and Asian athletics coaches

Croydon is hosting an exhibition of photos that reflect the contribution of key black and Asian athletics coaches to the world of sport.

The ‘COACH’ project has been led by Croydon’s Donna Fraser, the former athlete who is now UK Athletics’ Vice President and the organisation’s lead on equality, diversity & engagement.

Donna attended a launch event for the exhibition at Croydon’s Clocktower Cafe, where the photos, taken by Ernest Simons, will be on display until 11 November.

‘COACH’ recognises the contribution of past and present black and Asian athletics coaches in the UK from grass roots to elite level. It showcases a host of former sports people who are passionate about sharing their experiences and expertise with the UK’s current emerging athletics stars. The long-term goal of the project is to inspire the next generation to get into athletics and rise to the top of their disciplines.

On the opening of the public exhibition, Donna Fraser said: “As a Croydon Harrier through and through in my competitive days it is with great pride that we at UK Athletics pass over these 10 images to Croydon Clocktower for the public to be able to view.

“It was a great pleasure to witness such a huge turnout last week for the initial unveiling of the images, and I’m sure the photos will now continue their journey of inspiring communities to get involved in athletics, be it as a participant, coach, official or volunteer.”

Cllr-Godfrey“I’m really pleased Croydon is able to host this exhibition in Donna’s home town. We are always incredibly proud of her achievements on the international athletics stage and I believe the work she is doing to help encourage more young people to take up sport will see us produce generation after generation of new track and field stars.”

Further dates and locations of where pieces from the ‘COACH’ exhibition are to be displayed will be shared on the UK Athletics website.
