Croydon will mark the anniversary of the first lockdown by joining the National Day of Reflection today (23 March), remembering all those who have lost their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The leader of the council, Councillor Hamida Ali, is inviting communities across the borough to commemorate the lives of the 978 Croydon residents who have died, by observing the national one-minute silence at 12pm. Organised by Marie Curie, the National Day of Reflection also invites people to shine a light outside their doors or in their window at 8pm, to remember someone who has died and show your support to people going through a bereavement.
“As we mark this very sombre milestone, in Croydon we will remember all those who have lost their lives during this pandemic, every one of them a devastating loss for their family and friends.
“We will also remember the people they have left behind, many of whom were unable to mourn as they would have wanted. My deepest sympathies are with everyone who has lost a loved one.
“As we reflect on this tragic loss of life, it is also an opportunity to pause and remember our journey over the last year. None of us could ever have envisaged in March 2020, the impact Covid-19 would have on our lives and the extent of the personal sacrifices we would all be asked to make.
“In these very difficult times, Croydon’s communities have demonstrated strength, resilience and above all, kindness and compassion. We have come together to protect, help and support each other when it matters the most. My deepest thanks to our own council staff, our NHS, teachers, volunteers, businesses and everyone working on the frontline to provide vital services for others in the most challenging circumstances.
“I also want to thank all of our residents for the personal sacrifices you have made, and the help and care you have shown family, friends and neighbours. Your community spirit is a light in the dark and a reminder of all we can achieve when we truly come together.”
