Croydon’s Loyle Carner launches global Timberland campaign in home town

NME Award-winning Croydon musician Loyle Carner is set to launch a global urban greening campaign in Thornton Heath.

Croydon communities are invited to join the hip-hop musician at the Ambassador House forecourt, opposite Thornton Heath station, for a community event on Thursday 17 October, to kick start Timberland’s biggest ever campaign Nature Needs Heroes.

The campaign will see the forecourt transformed into a green community space for residents to enjoy, building on the work already undertaken by the council and the community to revitalise the space. The green community hub will see the installation of plants, timber planters and other features to create an urban oasis bringing a touch of nature to the heart of the area.

The launch event will mark the first phase of the urban greening project, and starts at 12pm. Loyle, who grew up in Croydon, will be in attendance and there will be live music by local artists, food stalls and a glimpse of the transformation concepts which local residents community will have the chance to provide feedback on.

The forecourt is one of three spaces chosen in Croydon for the Nature Needs Heroes campaign, which will encourage communities to become London National Park City Rangers, to help make the capital greener, healthier and wilder. The second site is The BRIT School, where Loyle studied, which will have its garden redesigned to include planters and seating to create a tranquil place staff and students can reflect and unwind in, that can also be used for small group activities.

A third smaller space in a Croydon location to be announced will show no matter how little space you may have, there is always a way to make your home a greener space.

“This is an incredibly exciting project and it is fantastic that Loyle and Timberland chose Croydon not only as the place to launch their campaign, but to show the impact urban greening can have not just on how an area looks, but also how it can be used to create a space to bring the local community together.

“As Croydon leads the way in urban greening I’d urge residents to come along to find out more about the project and how this collaboration with Loyle and Timberland will complement council plans to transform the forecourt of Ambassador House.”
