Major improvement works to transform the town centre were completed over the Easter break, as part of the council’s Connected Croydon programme.
Works took place in key areas of the metropolitan centre, in George Street outside East Croydon, Church Street, and West Croydon.
It saw a huge team effort with more than 200 people involved across the three sites in planning, supervising and carrying out the work.
The works are the latest phase of Connected Croydon, a £50m project jointly funded by the council and Greater London Authority, to transform the town centre through improvements to the high street and transport infrastructure.
London Tramlink closed part of its town centre loop to enable the works to safely take place.
East Croydon
New pavement, kerbs, fencing and topsoil for new plants have been installed in George Street, along with a new seating wall for the East Croydon tram platform and new paving blocks around the tracks.
They are part of a £4m project which began at the start of the year to improve the interchange between different forms of transport around East Croydon and the route into the town centre.
Over the next six months work will take place completing new pavements at the Wellesley Road junction along with new flowers, shrubs and trees, and installation of street furniture such as benches, little bins and cycle racks.
Church Street
Work in Church Street has delivered new paving, kerbs and lampposts as well as frontage improvements to 10 buildings.
In addition two new crossing points have been completed and new traffic signals have been installed at the junction with Frith Road, including pedestrian counters.
The next stage of work includes new pavements from Reeves Corner to Crown Hill, resurfacing of the carriageway, new street furniture, new trees and improvements to 17 building fronts.
West Croydon
Major works took place in the former scrubland between the tram stop and rail station to prepare the ground for widening the tram stop and footpath.
Work on this is now well-advanced, while new kerbing, paving, and replacement street lights have been installed.
These latest works are part of a £3m investment in West Croydon to transform the area into a welcoming entry point to the town, with more space for pedestrians and better connections.
The council’s executive director for place, Jo Negrini, said: “The team has worked tirelessly around the clock to deliver these major improvements in a very short period of time.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved for their fantastic effort over the Easter break as well as members of the public for their patience during the disruption caused as a result of the tram closures.
“These were essential works in key parts of the town centre, which residents and visitors to Croydon will benefit from.”
