Hop into action this spring with sugar smart swaps

Croydon Council’s SUGAR SMART initiative has launched a new campaign that encourages residents to take action by ditching sweets for healthier treats this spring.

The poster and online campaign aims to get more people to better take care of their teeth and gums and maintain a healthy weight. Tooth decay is the leading cause for hospitalisation among five to nine year olds in the UK.

Making the choice to swap chocolates, sweet biscuits or fizzy drinks for fruit, sugar-free options, or water can be simple.

Healthier options can be achieved by making slight changes to the food and drink items you normally buy. For example, you can shop for no added sugar varieties of tasty milkshakes and other favourite items you enjoy during the warmer months.

There are also sugar swap quick wins for residents, schools, early year’s settings and businesses on the council’s website www.croydon.gov.uk/sugarsmart

SUGAR SMART Croydon is a partnership with the council, national charity Sustain and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver to raise awareness of the hidden sugars in popular food and drinks and the health risks of consuming too much sugar.

Councillor Jane Avis, Croydon Council’s lead for families, health and social care:

“Spring is all about new beginnings. This is a great opportunity to make at least one sugar swap this season. Becoming a SUGAR SMART borough is a key part of our efforts to reduce obesity in children and adults as well as tackling dental hygiene issues. Simple sugar swaps can greatly help to reduce the risk of heart disease, gum disease and type 2 diabetes. You can also encourage friends, family and colleagues to join you on your sugar smart journey.”
