A majority of residents support council plans to introduce 20mph speed limits on roads in the north of the borough.
Residents, businesses and local groups were asked to give their views about introducing them in streets in parts of South Norwood, Selhurst, Bensham Manor, Thornton Heath and Upper Norwood.
The results of the consultation were announced by Councillor Kathy Bee at cabinet last night (Monday, 13 July). She told the meeting that 52.5% of respondents were in favour of reduced speed limits. Out of the 2,320 responses, 46.4% were opposed to and 1.1% undecided.
The council is now carrying out a detailed analysis of feedback it has received from residents with a view to progressing to a formal consultation period. If approved the scheme could be implemented over the winter months and be operational by April next year.
Cabinet decided in March to ask people across the borough if they want the new speed limits, with the north being consulted first before the council asks people in other areas of Croydon from next year.
Extensive 20mph speed limits help cut the risk of accidents, cut congestion and pollution levels, encourage less car use and discourage rat-running in quieter streets.
