Mayor Perry – listening to Croydon

Thank you to New Addington Pathfinders for their support for a project created by a group of local young people which is working to keep our community safe.

The Safe Haven initiative which is where a young person who feels unsafe can take sanctuary in a shop or business premises is being supported by Croydon Voluntary Action and Victim Support. Young people in New Addington linked in with the Central Parade Business Partnership and the New Addington BID to pilot the scheme. It has been such a success it is hoped the scheme will be rolled out across the borough with the option of safe havens for older people and vulnerable adults.

Community safety is a priority for me so it is good news that partnership working is reaping real success in the town centre with a significant 12 per cent reduction in offences over the festive period thanks to Croydon BID collaborating with the police to strengthen patrol teams which will continue until the end of March.

This coincided with the delivery of other successful operations by the police including the continued use of Live Facial Recognition technology capturing dozens of wanted criminals and the deployment of over 150 officers across a two-day period in North End and West Croydon.

Croydon BID has also been involved in extensive deep cleaning operations around East Croydon station and along George Street which saw 48 graffiti tags removed. Congratulations to all in making Croydon a cleaner and safer town we can all be proud of.

Croydon Town Centre: Have your say is a survey where you can have your say on our regeneration plan and what is most important in an ideal town centre. For our young people, you can take part in our Croydon Town Centre: Have your say – young locals version, aimed at hearing from the borough’s young adults under 21. Both surveys close on 28 February. Be sure to have your say and help shape the vision for a revitalised town centre.

Croydon recently partnered with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) to revive 32 tennis courts across 14 of our parks – with playing conditions now greatly improved for those looking to enjoy a game of tennis. The courts have now reopened, and I hope residents take the take advantage of these brilliant new facilities and enjoy a game of tennis. You can find more information on the reopening of the courts on our website.

I was delighted to be able to attend a reception organised by the Civic Mayor Tony Pearson to mark Croydon funeral directors Rowland Brothers 150th anniversary (pictured). Huge congratulations to them for their long service to the borough.

You can now also request I attend an event via the council’s website by filling in an online booking form on the council website.

Have a good weekend

Mayor Perry
