Mayor Perry to reopen Purley Pool and Leisure Centre

Mayor Perry has today announced that he will get Purley Pool and Leisure Centre back up and running as quickly as possible for local people.

Visiting the centre on his fourth day in office, Croydon’s Executive Mayor reiterated his firm commitment to restore the pool and facilities for residents.

Meeting centre staff and Council officers and officials this morning, he tasked them to immediately start exploring options to make it happen.

Purley Leisure Centre shut its door at the beginning of the pandemic and has not re-opened since.

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon said:

“Purley Leisure Centre is a much-loved local facility that people of all ages rely on – it is at the heart of our community and our high street, and I am determined to get people back through the doors as soon as possible.

“Re-opening the centre will restore much-needed health and wellbeing facilities for residents, while also driving footfall to our district centre, benefitting local businesses.

“It’s totally unacceptable that the pool has been allowed to fall into a state of disrepair due to lack of proper care or attention, and this morning I have set the wheels in motion to get it sorted.”

Getting the leisure centre open is the latest priority announced by Mayor Perry during his first week in office.

This follows yesterday’s commitment to businesses that the council is here to do whatever it can to support them in the wake of the pandemic and drive people back to local high streets.

Earlier this week Mayor Perry announced plans to overhaul planning policy and tackle graffiti in a drive to clean up Croydon and restore pride in the borough.
