Mental health is not a joke! Special comedy night in Croydon’s Fairfield Halls

An array of popular comedians and variety performers will top the bill at a special night to raise funds on World Mental Health Day at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls on Thursday, 10 October at 7.30pm.

Croydon Council, Pension Protection Fund and the charity Mind in Croydon have organised the comedy night, for over 18s, with ticket sale proceeds going towards the vital work being carried out by Mind to tackle mental health issues.

The comedy line-up includes:
• Dave Chawner – award-winning comic, author, presenter and mental health campaigner
• Ava Cardo – drag queen and cabaret star – entertainment, live singing, comedy action.
• Lili La Scala – vintage dame with a powerful voice, sky high heels and a razor-sharp wit.
• Sam Smedley – charm and sarcasm in equal measures – comedy gold.
• Shirley Devine – drag queen and comedian – tall, blonde, beautiful and hilarious.

Before the comedy performances, a free family community day of events is also taking place at Fairfield Halls from 12-5pm to get more people to focus on how best to take care of their mental health.

The day involves fun activities, beauty treatments, haircuts, health and wellbeing advice and volunteering opportunities. There will also be a bargain pop up fashion shop on the day.

The community day is themed around the five ways to wellbeing, which are things that everyone can do in their daily life to have better mental health by connecting with others, being active, continuing to learn, giving your time and taking notice of what’s around you.

Mental health is not a joke! Comedy night tickets are £10 and available from www.fairfield.co.uk/whats-on/mental-health-is-not-a-joke/

Councillor Janet Campbell, Croydon Council’s deputy lead for families, health and social care: “Mental health is everyone’s business and Croydon Council is proud to support these fantastic events on World Mental Health Day. One in six adults experience a mental health problem, and issues are becoming more prevalent among young people. The whole day at Fairfield Halls offers people the opportunity to explore mental wellbeing and obtain information to support yourself and those around you.”

Richard Pacitti, Chief Executive at Mind in Croydon, said: “We are really pleased to work with Croydon Council and the Pension Protection Fund on the largest ever World Mental Health Day event in Croydon. It will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase all the excellent work in the borough as well as raising money for Mind in Croydon to continue to provide the wide range of services to residents who come to us for help and support.”

Oliver Morley, Chief Executive at the Pension Protection Fund, said: “As a large employer in Croydon, we are pleased to be able to continue our support of Mind in Croydon, our local charity of choice, and organise events like these. It’s important we talk about mental health and provide support to our community and employees alike.”
