Main roads in the town centre are to be affected by night-time road closures from this evening, as the final part of the council’s improvements works to Wellesley Road get under way.
As part of the overall regeneration of the town centre, Croydon is investing over £2m to make one of the borough’s main roads more pedestrian and cycle friendly.
From Friday 10 February to Monday 20 February, various works will be taking place along Wellesley Road. From 10pm until 5am during this period, Croydon Underpass will be closed in both directions for essential maintenance.
There will also be no exit onto Wellesley Road from Lansdowne Road and Sydenham Road from Friday 10 February through to Saturday 18 February during the hours of 10pm and 5am.
Poplar Walk will be closed from 10pm until 5am the following day on the evenings of 15, 16, 17 and 18 February.
Local diversions will be in operation during the maintenance works and traffic marshals will also be in place to support residents and local businesses requiring access during these times.
As part of the improvements programme the Wellesley Road U turn will be permanently removed and all traffic will be diverted down Wellesley Road, Hogarth Crescent and Newgate.
The works have been planned to be completed ahead of further works along Wellesley Road which will be carried out over the Easter period.
