Nine trial Healthy School Street schemes to be made permanent

Nine Healthy School Street (HSS) schemes will remain in place following a green light from the Council’s Cabinet this week, (27 September, 2023).

Healthy School Streets aim to improve safety around schools and encourage more pupils to walk, cycle and scoot more often, by limiting motor traffic on the surrounding roads during school drop-off and pick-up times.

As with any other HSS, residents living within the scheme area are eligible to apply for a free School Street Exemption permit so they can have access at all times. In addition, exemption permits are available to some road-users who may need access – including SEN (Special Educational Needs) transport. Other vehicles, such as emergency services or refuse vehicles will be automatically exempt.

The nine sites are:

  • Christ Church CofE Primary School
  • Downsview Primary and Nursery School
  • Ecclesbourne Primary School
  • Harris Primary Academy Haling Park
  • Harris Primary Academy Croydon
  • Oasis Academy Ryelands
  • Ridgeway Primary School
  • St Thomas Becket Catholic Primary School
  • St Joseph’s Catholic Junior School

Taking into consideration both feedback from an informal consultation in 2020, as well as the results of this six-month statutory consultation, the Council has decided to remove the trial scheme at Keston Primary School.

The Keston Primary School scheme will cease operations on Friday 20 October, 2023.

Following feedback from the previous consultation, extra signage was put in place in Haling Road, Montpelier Road, and Southcote Road that goes beyond legal expectations, to offer more advanced warning for drivers to avoid penalty charge notices.

This decision brings the borough’s total to 41 trial and permanent schemes.

More information about Healthy School Streets can be found on the council website.

Jason Perry

“We have taken a balanced approach that listens to residents and makes changes to schemes that aren’t working, where possible, and removes the ones that can’t be amended. I’m really pleased we took the time to engage with residents and we will continue to work with schools to find more ways to encourage safer and healthier journeys.”
