Nominations open for 2018 Mayor’s Civic Awards

The search is now on for inspirational Croydon residents who deserve to be nominated for this year’s Civic Awards.

Each year the Mayor of Croydon hosts a ceremony that celebrates the individuals, businesses and organisations whose dedication to their community improves the lives of local people. This could be an outstanding volunteer, a residents’ group that takes pride in keeping Croydon clean and green, or a young high-achiever who inspires and helps others to do the same.

The 11 awards categories this year include two new ones for 2018 – Outstanding Contribution to Foster Care award and Housing Hero of the Year. The awards categories are:

1. Volunteer of the Year
2. Voluntary Group of the Year
3. Young Achiever of the Year
4. Outstanding Contribution to Foster Care award
5. Contribution to Sport and Healthy Living
6. Don’t Mess with Croydon – Take Pride
7. Housing Hero of the Year
8. Good Neighbour award
9. Business in the Community
10. Fairer Croydon
11. Stronger Together

Nominations for the 2018 awards are now open and must be received by Monday 3 September. The award finalists in each of the categories will be announced in September and invited to attend the glittering ceremony on Wednesday 17 October, where the winners will be revealed.

Also being presented on the night is the Mayor’s Lifetime Contribution award, which will go to a person or group who has made an outstanding contribution to the borough. Last year’s winner was Brian Hollands, who had spent 25 years volunteering at St Christopher’s Hospice.

The Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Bernadette Khan, said: “Our annual Civic Awards celebrate Croydon’s community heroes whose actions have made this borough a better place to live, and they are especially important to me because my mayoral priorities are about inclusiveness and equality.”

Councillor Hamida Ali, cabinet member for safer Croydon and communities, said: “So many people across the borough make a massive difference to the lives of other people through giving their time and commitment – and these awards give us an opportunity to highlight their achievements and recognise their contribution publicly. Please spread the word and get nominating!”
