Oasis and Croydon Council launch new youth centre project at Ashburton Park

The community transformation charity Oasis launched their new partnership with Croydon Council to develop a new youth centre in Ashburton Park in Addiscombe, last Friday (29 September) in the park.

Earlier this year, the council announced that it had been awarded development funding of £304,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to help progress plans to apply for a full National Lottery grant at a later date. The project aims to significantly upgrade Ashburton Park for its 100th anniversary.

Over the next year, the grant will support investigations into restoring key areas of the park, with input from the local community. Part of this funding will support Oasis in developing a heritage and environmental project at a renewed Ashburton Park youth centre.

The planned youth centre aims to provide a safe space for children and young people and offer a range of opportunities in the local community, as well as practical help and support for parents and carers.

Surveying and development are currently taking place, and work on the site is planned to start next year.

Steve Chalke, Founder of Oasis, speaking at the event said:

“Out of Ashburton Park Lodge will arise hope and a voice for our young people. Out of these crucial voices we will mould something beautiful that will be about caring for all of the children in Croydon not just a particular few. No child is safe until every child is safe. This is about the inclusion of everyone in our community. We all have a part to play.”

Jason Perry

“We know how important it is for all our children and young people to be able to access the right help, when and where they need it – in the heart of their local community. We’re pleased to be working with Oasis and the local community as we develop our plans for the future of Ashburton Park, to include a safe space for young people where they can access support and new opportunities.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
